Cooperative Guard without Havel, Solana

Cooperative Guard '99 has sparked opposition among the Communist party. It has called a demonstration to protest against membership in NATO and airstrikes in Yugoslavia for June 3 in Vyškov. The demonstration will go on as planned despite the absence of Václav Havel and NATO General-Secretary Javier Solana.
With Havel still hospitalized with a viral infection, Solana has decided to stay in Brussels instead of coming to the CR to observe maneuvers. The two were to discuss NATO policy and observe maneuvers in Vyškov. Cooperative Guard started yesterday with 2000 NATO and Partner for Peace country soldiers participating.
This year's drill will concentrate on NATO strategic planning of peace support missions and interoperability among all 26 countries participating. NATO will drill the multi-national Eurocorps force from Luxembourg, Belgium, France, Spain, Germany.
Police and security, expecting the worst, are on full alert.
