CR accepts EP resolution on Temelin
Prague (čtk)
The Czech Republic accepts the text of the European Parliament resolution on the nuclear power station Temelin, approved by the European Parliament Thursday, although it sees erroneous or imprecise information in it, Foreign Ministry spokesman announced.
He stressed, however, that the resolution "did not have any legal consequences for the Czech Republic."
Pospisil voiced regret over the fact that "arguments used by Czech deputies and senators" had been ignored and that the EP discussed the question of Temelin as part of its urgent procedures. The consequence of this was very low participation of deputies in the drafting and approval of the resolution, which was also reflected in its contents, Pospisil said.
The resolution approved by the European parliament, calls on the Czech government to carry out an environmental impact assessment of the station before connecting it to the national grid.
The resolution was approved by most deputies present at a plenary session in Strasbourg. It does not demand that it should not be set into operation or link it with the Czech Republic's EU candidacy.
"Sovereign countries have a right to decide about their energy," writes the text which reflects a long-standing debate about nuclear energy in the EU.
In connection with the above-mentioned mistakes and imprecise information Pospisil spoke about "banging on open doors," because information is being demanded which has been provided and is being provided, and demands are raised which are natural to the Czech government. The Czech side did not have an opportunity to put things right and explain them.
"We can only hope that at the next meeting of the Czech- European Union parliamentary committee a responsible discussion on the topic will take place and Czech deputies and senators will receive an opportunity to answer their colleagues' questions... on the nuclear power station Temelin," Pospisil said.
He stressed that the Czech Republic fully respected the EP and it had voiced the view in the past that it could imagine it having a more prestigious position in the future in the framework of EU structures.
